To capture or choose the best photo for your portrait, outdoor photography is highly recommended. Cloudy days offer ideal lighting, providing even illumination throughout the day. If it’s sunny, aim to take photos an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset for softer, more flattering light. Set aside about 30 minutes for your session to ensure you get the perfect shot. Indoor photos often lack the clarity and detail that well-lit outdoor settings can provide.
Getting on the subject’s level is crucial for an intimate and engaging portrait. Photos taken from eye level offer a more personal perspective, while shots from above can distort features and feel less natural. Additionally, getting close helps capture the fine details that make the portrait special. Distant shots might seem adequate at first, but zooming in often reveals a loss of detail that close-ups preserve.
Lighting also plays a significant role in creating a lively and engaging expression. Ensure there’s a reflection in the subject’s eyes to give them a vibrant, alert look. Even on cloudy days, positioning yourself so that the light is directed towards your subject can help achieve this effect.
Take plenty of photos from various angles and use the full 30 minutes of your session to find the perfect image. You can’t send me too many! If the subject (pets & children) are not as cooperative or needs some encouragement, having a helper can be very useful in getting them to pose naturally. Finally, remind your subject to brush their hair or adjust their attire before the session to avoid any tangles or imperfections. If you encounter any difficulties feel free to reach out.
